Winter tanning: Is it safe?
WVLT VOLUNTEER TV Knoxville, TN:
Winter tanning: Is it safe?
Is sunless tanning a safer alternative?
Many people seem to think that an indoor tan from
a booth is less harmful than sitting in the sun all
day and risking getting burned.
Medical Reporter Jessa Goddard looked for the
answers and found some from a local tanning
bed establishment.
"Just like the sun, tanning beds emit UV-A and
UV-B rays. That, the tanning industry and the
medical community agree. But while dermatologists
will tell you there's no such thing as a safe tan,
tanning salon staff will tell you moderation is key.
'All the beds here have UV-A and UV-B rays. The
high pressures only have two percent of the UV-B
ray, so that's why you're so highly unlikely to burn
in the high pressures,' says Lisa Harmon, from
Yucatan Sun Spa."
